Whether you are trying to DO something, like getting started on that new project at work or home, or trying NOT TO DO something, like eating sweets when your goal is to lose weight, apply the 10-minute rule:
Ask yourself, can I (fill in your blank) for 10 minutes? Of course!! So promise yourself 10 minutes. Most often, after 10 minutes, you'll be so involved in the activity you want or need to do, you will easily see it through to the end. Or, if you're using it to "not" do something, you won't want to any longer; you will have moved on.
For some situations, the thought may be a little pesky. For example, this can be especially true when you're trying to change your eating habits. When you combine this with a habit of eating as a way to avoid tasks, it can be even more challenging to get rid of the thought of a comfort food. If the thought returns, repeat the 10-minute process. And again, if needed.
Maybe you're moving along quite well on that task you started and the temptation to get distracted moves in; repeat the 10-minute cycle.
Some days, and for some things, one 10-minute cycle will be more than enough. Other days it will need a repeat. One final note: there are some rare occasions that, after 10 minutes, you won't want to keep going...honor that. For example, one day Lisa was trying to get started on a task. She sat down and promised herself 10 minutes. After that 10, she just couldn't get going. That was her day to take a break.
The importance of honoring that is your mind has to believe the 10-minute rule is true. If you continue beyond that point, you've disempowered the strategy for the next time.
